When to Use Each Format
JPEG / JPG
Best for photographs and images with smooth gradients. Use JPEG when universal compatibility is needed and slight quality loss is acceptable. Not suitable for images requiring transparency or text sharpness.
PNG
Best for images requiring transparency, sharp edges, or text (logos, icons, screenshots). PNG is lossless, so quality is preserved, but file sizes are larger than JPEG or WebP.
WebP
The modern web standard. WebP offers superior compression for both photos (25-35% smaller than JPEG) and graphics. Supports transparency and animation. Use WebP with a JPEG or PNG fallback for wide compatibility.
AVIF
The next-generation format with the best compression ratios. Ideal for modern web applications targeting up-to-date browsers. Always provide WebP or JPEG fallbacks for older browsers.
Conversion Tips
When converting between formats, always start from the highest quality source. Converting from lossy JPEG to PNG does not recover lost quality. For Web-optimized workflows, keep originals in a lossless format (PNG or TIFF) and export to WebP for production. Our image converter handles all these conversions in your browser without uploading files to any server.
